Mamilla is an old Jerusalem neighborhood, situated in the valley that links the Old City’s Jaffa Gate to the new city. The neighborhood was established at the end of the 19th century to house Jewish and Arab merchants and tradesmen, and flourished as part of the city’s commercial center. During the years 1948-1967 Mamilla was in the no-man’s land between Israel and Jordan. Many of the neighborhood’s buildings were destroyed and its overall status deteriorated. After the Six Day War it was decided to demolish Mamilla and rebuild it as a neighborhood subdivided into residential, hotel, commercial and office areas, representing one of modern Jerusalem’s largest, longest, and most expensive development initiatives. As of early 2006 only the residential and hotel areas had been built.

Jerusalem’s German Colony was built by members of the German Templar Society at the end of the 19th century, one of several Templar colonies in Palestine. Other such colonies were built in Jaffa, Haifa and the Galilee.

The Templars came to Palestine to escape religious persecution in their country of origin, and to give practical expression to their creed – salvation through settling the Holy Land.
During the 1960s and 1970s Israeli-style apartment buildings were constructed in the German Colony, as elsewhere, detracting somewhat from the neighborhood’s charm. Since the 1980s, with the growth in public awareness of preservation issues, all new buildings in the Colony have been built in a style that conforms to the neighborhood’s original atmosphere: low-rise, tiled roofs, arched windows, an emphasis on gardens and landscaping, etc. This has contributed to preserving the German Colony’s unique character as a “central European” village in the heart of Jerusalem, interspersed with local elements.

Over the past decade numerous cafes, restaurants and boutiques have opened in the German Colony, and the area has taken on a somewhat bohemian aspect. The German Colony is one of Jerusalem’s liveliest neighborhoods.
